Sigurður Kr Sigurðsson

My name is Sigurdur Kr. Sigurdsson.  I was born in Reykjavik in 1953 and trace my roots to Arnarfjordur in the west of Iceland and the Westman Islands to the south.

Some 20 years ago, I became interested in the craft of carving patterns and shapes into wood, horn and bone.  I started attending various courses and classes and soon met master carver Orn Sigurdsson.  Orn has taught classes in carving for many years and I learned the basics from him

.

An important part of Iceland´s heritage is a distinct style of carving which evolved from the time the country was settled in the late 800´s till modern times.  Orn has largely looked towards these traditional patterns for his work and has encouraged his students to go down that same path.

These shapes and patterns were prevalent in my early work and I used a traditional Icelandic letter font (Hoefudletur) for text and names.

​

As often happens along the way, one begins to push boundaries and think of new projects or items to create.  The possibilities are endless.

​

When the corona virus struck, increased free time enabled me to devote more energy to my interest in carving.   I have utilized this extra time to create in wood many of the ideas that had been percolating in my mind.

​

Happily many of my projects have caught the attention of others and I have been asked to create pieces for people in Iceland and abroad, who are searching for something special and unusual that can not be found in stores.

​

It has been energizing to receive such encouragement from all over and to be urged on to explore my craft further.  I intend to fully use this energy as creative fuel, both for my own enjoyment and hopefully also for others.
